Talented And Gifted

Knox County Schools Program for Talented and Gifted (TAG) serves students who are:

1. Intellectually Gifted as defined by the Rules and Regulations for the State of Tennessee
OR
2. Academically Able as defined through teacher identification and achievement test scores
OR
3. Creative Producers as defined by teacher identification and student self-selection.

The Program for Talented and Gifted operates in every elementary. Advanced students kindergarten through second grade participate in Enrichment Classes. Grade three formally begins the TAG program and continues through grade five. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are available for the advanced student at the high school level.

The TAG curriculum is a process - product approach used to stimulate logical, creative and responsible problem solving. Through a variety of learning experiences that integrate the skills for research, communication, problem solving and interpersonal relationships, students investigate environmental and social dilemmas.

The GLOBE program and Future or Community Problem Solving is offered at each elementary and middle school. Other programs, such as Math Olympiad, Energy Bowl, Stock Market, Chess and the Junior Great Books Program are offered according to student choice. Special interest topics in the Sciences, Humanities and the Arts, Civilizations, and Problems and Solutions enable students to participate in research, presentations and field experiences. Students are encouraged to investigate real problems through independent study.

Through the regular classroom program students can be grouped at higher levels for instruction in reading and mathematics. Specialists assist classroom teachers with appropriate placement based on the student’s abilities and the standards for these advanced areas. Individual modifications for specific students or for small groups of students are provided as needed.
