World Languages

The World Language/ESL Department is charged with instruction in two areas:  World Languages and English as a Second Language.

The Knox County School System offers instruction in five languages:  French, German, Latin, Russian, and Spanish.  All high schools offer a minimum selection of courses in three languages through the third year.  Most high schools offer language courses through the fourth year and the AP level. 

Middle Schools

Five middle schools offer language instruction.  The curricula for all language courses are aligned with our state curriculum and standards. Middle school programs are Bearden Middle School, Carter Middle School, Powell Middle School, South-Doyle Middle School, and Vine Middle School

English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language is taught as a pull-out program in Knox County Schools. The ESL program is aligned with the Tennessee state policy and guidelines.  The ESL office provides translations of school documents for parents in a language they understand via Transact.  Fourteen traveling teachers provide ESL instruction at all Knox County Schools.
