Over 370 Knox County eighth graders will spend next week in 47 area
businesses learning what it takes to succeed.
As part of the annual Schooled for Success program, these
students from every middle school in Knox County will intern with area
businesses and government offices to learn what it is like in the "real"
world of work. They will have the opportunity to explore various careers,
accomplish appropriate employee tasks, be mentored by employees and
employers, build a work record, and have a real and appropriate work
experience.
The internship culminates a year-long program in which students complete
a portfolio focusing on self-assessment, career exploration, career
planning, pre employment skills development and employment skills development.
During the in-school curriculum students have the opportunity to benefit
from INFOE career assessment software as they use a lab of laptop computers
which is rotated from school to school. The students and their parents
also have an opportunity to participate in a career fair, interacting
with about 90 businesses representing many careers.
"Schooled for Success" gives Knox County eighth graders an
innovative avenue to begin to make some valid career decisions and to
better connect school to work.
The Junior League of Knoxville is a partner in "Schooled for Success"
providing a committee of ten area leaders who assist the program by
organizing breakfast for all students each morning and by coordinating
transportation of students to the intern sites each day.
