KCS Adult Education Program Offers Free Testing
Knox County Schools Adult Education Office will offer free Official Practice Tests as preparation for those individuals preparing to take the General Educational Development exam.

Beginning January 1, 2003, individuals must show proof that they have taken the Official Practice Test at a Department of Labor and Workforce Development Adult Education Office before they will be allowed to take the GED exam.

“This is a new prerequisite to taking the GED exam in the state of Tennessee,” said Neil Battle, Adult Education Supervisor for Knox County Schools. “This new requirement will decrease failure and alleviate frustration in those pursuing their high school equivalency credential.”

“The Official Practice Test is a half-length test approved by the American Council on Education as an indicator of how one will perform on the actual GED exam,” said Battle. “It includes all subject areas: Language Arts Writing, Language Arts Reading, Social Studies, Science and Math.”

There is no score requirement for the practice test, but Battle hopes individuals who are deficient in one or more areas will enroll in an adult education class to work on improving those areas. “By making this a requirement, the State Office of Adult Education hopes to decrease failure and save individuals both time and money,” he said.
